WHO I AM
I work to bridge the worlds of martial arts, ethics, and physical education together. My studies in martial arts and physical education have convinced me that there is much both fields can offer the other. Physical educators recognize the value of the empowerment and self-defense that can come from martial arts training, and martial arts teachers are in-effect a specialized form of physical educator. This mutual benefit is not always easy to see, and sometimes even more difficult to incorporate into a school's curriculum.
Seeing this gap in understanding, I have developed expertise in bridging these fields that can benefit you and your students in recognizing, accessing, and utilizing techniques that can improve your practice and curriculum. Contact me below for curriculum, research, workshops, or related projects!

PAST & PRESENT
The Maido Martial Arts Academy is an organization dedicated to research and education of martial arts. I founded Maido to act as a professional hub for martial artists and physical educators to connect and share knowledge and practice.
Along with colleagues from Springfield College, presented research-based instructional models and offered expertise of the newly passed ESSA to the Puerto Rico Association for Physical Education and Recreation.
Represented Springfield College and MA in advocating to Congress for physical education and health education to be included as core subjects in the newly passed Every Student Succeeds Act.
Presented martial arts as standards-based curriculum at the 2015 SHAPE America National Convention in Minneapolis.
TESTIMONIALS
"In my years working with Dr. Staats I have found him to be dependable and conscientious. His efforts within the field of research have been diligent and practical to the impacted field. His skills in presentation help to develop a connection with his audience, be they practitioners or researchers. While participating on an expert panel discussion with my colleague, I found his insight to be engaging and useful for driving the discussion to further relevant points. I look forward to utilizing his skills in the future to support my scholastic endeavors and highly recommend his services to others."
Scott Doig - Assistant Professor
"Dr. Shane Staats has an impressive skill set, unique knowledge and professionalism I needed to streamline the effectiveness of my own art Guardian Way. I would highly recommend him to any professional martial artist looking to cultivate the core of their own art."
Master Chris Van Mieghem
"Shane reviving the fencing club at UB was wonderful and I had a lot of fun. I learned so much about the etiquette of the sport and he even brought a historical combat teacher one day who taught us how fencing was done before it was a sport. It was a very fun experience!"
